President Obama went to Europe and told them“there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.”
He gave a gracious and conciliatory speech to Iranians – which their leadership met with derision.
Obama told our neighbors to the South that “Too often, the United States has not pursued and sustained engagement with our neighbors.”
Yet At the Latin American summit Obama had to endure an hour of America -bashing by Nicaraguan president Ortega while Venezuela’s president chavez called him an ignoramus with a stench.
During his whirlwind tour around the world President Obama has so far apologized for American arrogance, Hiroshima, torture, Guantanamo, the global financial crisis and having insufficient respect for Muslims.
What is going on here? How many times does Obama have to beat his chest and cry mea culpa?
During the campaign, President Obama told America he would consult more with our allies and sit down with our adversaries – and implied they’d be more willing to grant us concessions as a result. So far, President Obama’s apology tour may have made him more personally popular around the world, but it hasn’t translated into tangible gains for the country.
The Russians pointedly refused to press Iran to halt its nuclear weapons program. The Chinese refused to pressure North Korea over its missile launch. The Europeans, especially Germany and France, refused to launch expensive programs to stimulate their economies out of recession, preferring to take a free ride off the American spending.
Obama may believe America looks stronger and more self-confident when it apologizes for perceived slights and past mistakes. But so far it hasn’t turned out that way. Our allies and our adversaries may appreciate being consulted more and treated better, but what good is it doing
