Why deterrence won’t work – Iran’s nukes

The Obama Administration is in a quandary over how to deal with Iran’s nuclear weapons. So far nothing they’ve tried has worked – not Obama’s pledge for direct diplomacy, nor his hat-in-hand mission to Moscow requesting their help.

So Team Obama has started hinting we might have to live with Iranian nukes – but don’t worry – we will extend American’s nuclear umbrella over Israel and the moderate Arab States……. in a modern day Middle East version of Cold War Deterrence. In order words, the US pledges we’d nuke Iran if they tried to nuke their neighbors.

Whoa, wait a minute.

Obama may be a gifted orator, but does he think he can persuade the American public we should risk nuclear war to protect Tel Aviv or Riyadh?

And even if he did, what about Israel? Would they be willing to bet their existence on deterrence, when President Ahmadinejad regularly boasts he will ‘wipe Israel off the face of the earth”?

What about the moderate Muslim nations? If Shiite, Persian Iran develops nuclear weapons, what about the Sunni Arab states in region? Will countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Syria and even Turkey conclude they need nuclear weapons to guarantee their security?

Finally, given Iran’s close ties to terrorist groups, how secure would its nuclear stockpile would be? Would Iranian nuclear weapons find their way into the hands of people who would have no hesitation in using them?

Team Obama doesn’t have any good answers when it comes to Iran’s nukes but they better find some soon – if they don’t we will soon see a Middle East armed with nuclear weapons – before President Obama leaves office. And that would be like throwing a lighted match into a room filled with gas fumes.
