President Obama likes to compare himself to Pres. Reagan. How’s he doing?

When Reagan was sworn into office in January 1981, the United States had record inflation, high unemployment and slow growth. It was commonly assumed our military had fallen behind that of our superpower rival, the Soviet Union. America has spent a decade in isolation, licking its wounds after Vietnam. It’s willingness to remain the preeminent player on the world stage was in doubt.

So Reagan cut taxes and spending to repair the economy. He rebuilt our military, including our nuclear deterrent. He restored the world’s faith in America as the leader of the Free World and America’s faith in ourselves. He said America was like a “shining city on a hill”.

Once the U.S. economy had rebounded and our military had been restored, Reagan presided over the demise of the Soviet Empire and negotiated an end to the Cold War — all without firing a shot. He helped liberate millions of people from the yoke of Communist oppression.

Contrast this to President Obama, who also came into office facing a troubled economy. He’s expanding government, greatly, and raising taxes, and yet the deficit is spiraling out of control and unemployment climbing. He begrudges America’s superpower status, which he acknowledges exists “whether we like it or not.” His efforts to extend “the hand of friendship” to the Iranian regime have been rebuffed. His attempts to enlist Chinese and Russian support to halt Iran’s nuclear program have so far met with failure. He has gone around the world apologizing for his predecessor’s actions and bowing to foreign leaders, yet seems powerless to enlist their help in solving the world’s tough problems.

Obama’s take as America: “I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism, and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.”

Hmmmmm. Which approach do you trust to keep America safe?
