Illegal immigration. We’ve been kicking this can down the road for thirty years and politicians on both sides of the issue are so hardened in their positions that we’re further away from a solution than ever.
So Arizona, in desperation, has passed legislation that will intimidate latinos but not solve the problem.
And the debate? To focus on Arizona! Dredge up all those old, politically charged arguments.
But the answer is simple – don’t open the whole can of worms of illegal immigration – take it step by step instead. Is there anyone on any side of this issue that wants an open border? No. So, start there, first seal the border.
Yet every attempt to secure the border seems to fail. Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano cancelled the border fence program for being too expensive and ineffective, feebly trying to assure us that the southwest border is as secure as ever. She’s the same person who disparaged a border fence while Arizona’s governor a few years back, and calls terrorist acts ‘man caused disasters’. Right.
If the planned fence isn’t working, fix it, don’t cancel it. This is a technology problem – and that’s what we’re supposed to be good at.
Too expensive? That’s rich coming from an Administration that’s put government spending on steroids. Opponents of the fence claim a handful of landowners would be adversely affected – okay, so buy ‘em out. Or that animals can’t get to their drinking water. Heck, bring the water to them.
Once we seal the border we can, step by step, deal with who’s here illegally. We can’t send them all back, and we can’t keep them all. So start peeling the onion. Convicted felons. No thanks. Taxpaying, productive members of society, give them a path to citizenship.
But please, President Obama, don’t just shrug. This problem needs fixing, now. Because a border that drugs and guns and illegals can get across is one that terrorists won’t take long to discover.
